The American dog tick, often referred to as the wood tick, is common across the U.S., except in the Rocky Mountains. These brown ticks with grayish-white patches can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when fully engorged. They have an oval, flattened body, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
While they prefer to feed on dogs, they can also bite humans and transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They are most active in spring and early summer. Regular pet checks and lawn maintenance are essential to reducing the risk of infestations.
Brown Dog Ticks, known for their reddish-brown hue, typically infest domestic dogs and thrive in warm climates like California. If dogs aren’t available, these ticks may also bite humans.
Adult Brown Dog Ticks are around 1/8″ in size but can swell to 1/2″ when engorged. They have six legs as larvae and eight legs as nymphs and adults. It’s essential to remove ticks from pets immediately to prevent health issues. Regularly inspect your pets and keep their living areas clean to minimize tick populations.
Pacific Coast ticks thrive in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, including areas around Scripps Ranch. These ticks are most active during cooler months, particularly April and May. While adults primarily feed on large mammals like deer, cattle, and horses, they will also bite dogs and humans.
These ticks are known to spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis has been reported in livestock. Around 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria that cause Pacific Coast tick fever, often mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is prevalent along the Pacific Coast, extending into British Columbia. This species is the main carrier of Lyme disease in these regions. The ticks typically inhabit forests, grasslands, and areas near water, and may also thrive in scrubby habitats. Though related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, they are primarily located on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from early winter through early summer, and nymphs peak in April, May, and June. Nymphs feed on small animals like lizards and rodents, rarely biting humans or pets. Regular yard maintenance and removing debris can help reduce the tick population.
